The thing about being on the road is you never knew where you'd end up. As it so happened, Dean and Sam were staying at a nearby motel and Dean wanted a drink in a major way. It had been a long day. Sam decided to stay behind and read and so Dean set out on his own. He left the Impala behind as it was just a short walk and a well lit night.

Dean walked into the cantina, ordered a beer and settled on a seat off near a corner. He sat down, leaning back in his chair and took a nice long cool drink.

"According to Sam 'wangst' means whining and angst." He has a drink of his own, the taste bringing back memories of the last war he'd been in. Dean can probably see the distant look in his eyes.

"Oh. So do all Sams go through that?" he asks. He notices the look in John's eyes. He'd seen looks like that many times.

"Every one I've ever met or heard of," says the older Winchester absently. "Sam wasn't as bad as some because she had Leeroy."

"I guess it would be easier if there was someone else. Sam and I just have each other, well.. and Bobby."

"Bobby." John snorts.

Dean is surprised by that reaction. "Yeah.. Bobby.. why?"

John just shakes his head with a slight grin. "Nothing."

Dean was worried there. He trusted Bobby and was scared that maybe based on another version of him, it was misplaced. Luckily John's grin didn't seem to say that.

"Oh good. Had me worried."

"He's alright." John sips his beer. "Just don't ever bank on any poker winnings he might promise."

Dean laughs at that. "He knows better than to play me anyway." He takes a swig of his own beer.

"The one I know hasn't learned yet."

"Really... you'll have to introduce me." Dean says with a smirk, smelling the cash.

"Nah." John grins slightly.

"Damn." He grins. "So do you live here? like... if I wanted to visit would this be the place to come?"

John nods and looks out the window toward the massive statue on the other side of the Valley. "Yes. I live in New Haven. Having the kids back on Earth is more risk than I'm willing to take."

"Grandpa!" calls a young female voice from the teleportal.

He turns his head, face lighting at sight of two fourteen year old girls; one petite dark-skinned redhead with hints of himself and Missouri in her face, and the other a tall, shapely blond who can only be related to Dean.

Whom she stops to scowl at in unfriendly manner.

"Good. I'd like to see you again. Buddy too." he's cut off by the new arrivals. Dean looks up at the blonde appreciatively until he reaches the face and the scowl and he subconciously sinks into his seat a little.

It's his own scowl, and his own eyes flashing at him with anger for a moment longer before she turns to John and taps him on the shoulder. "Lemme in, I wanna sit."

He does so. "Dean, this is Mara, Buddy's older sister." He nods to the redhead as she grabs a chair and sits at the end of the table. "And this is Mary." A nod to the blond, who's glaring out the window.

Awkward much? Dean felt way out of sorts but he dealt with it. "Um.. Hi Mara." he said. He didn't address Mary for fear of having her glare of doom turned back his way.

She smiles at him, green eyes bright and friendly. "Hi. Buddy showed me your trick. It was pretty cool."

Mary snorts, the scowls as John elbows her.

Dean smiles back at her. "Oh yeah? Well maybe I'll teach it to you sometime. I'll let Buddy have it as his own for awhile. You know any tricks?" His attention is drawn to the snort and the scowl. He turns slightly in his seat.

"Hey.. Mary. I don't know what an alternate of mine might have done to get your knickers in a twist but I think it would be really grown up of you to give me a chance and not hold it against me. I'm not the same one after all." he said kind of quietly so as not to draw much attention to it.

"Yeah, but I can't really remember how to do them right now." Mara's grin fades to apology as her green eyes darken with sadness.

"Chance at what?" She snorts again, eyes still on the window. "I have a family. I don't need some knockoff of my dad."

"Mary, that's enough." John frowns at her.

"That's okay Mara, no biggie." he turns to Mary again.

"I'm glad you have a family, it's more than I've got. I've just got Sam. I don't know you, I'm not your dad. If I'm somebody you don't wanna know that's totally cool with me. Just rather you didn't give me the cold shoulder when you do see me for somethin I didn't do. Y'know?"

She turns to frown at him, looking him right in the eye as though reading him.

Dean gives her a shrug and a half smile, showing he meant no malice, he just didn't want problems from somebody he didn't even know. He looked her right back in the eyes.

She turns back to the window. "Least you don't seem to have a stick...."

"Mary...."

She rolls her eyes and falls silent, then reaches back and pokes her grandfather gently in apology.
