Quiet interlude

Dog rocked slightly, his craggy face tender as he looked down at the tiny girl in his arms. Bethany had finally settled down and was now sleeping with her nose pressed against his chest, making tiny sighs with each breath.

He stroked his baby niece's soft hair, then sighed himself and sat back as he looked toward a corner of the living room. "Y'kin quit lurkin', Miss Vi, I know yer there."

There was a whisper of movement from the corner, then a swirl of laughing sea breeze that coalesced into the tall form of the violet-haired half-fae.

"I like watchin' yeh," she said softly as she walked over and dropped gracefully next to him on the couch, her violet eyes on his face as her mouth curved up gently in a smirk.

Dog blushed behind his beard and looked down at the baby again, suddenly feeling tongue-tied.

Violet chuckled. "How's yer sister?"

"Sleepin'," he rumbled softly without looking up. "She's ben up with Bethany most nights since we got here."

"I've heard 'em," murmured Vi, pulling her knees against her chest and wrapping herself in her satin cloak as her eyes went a little pensive. "It was Logan's own choosing to come here, but it wasn't an easy thing, was it?"

"No." Dog drew in a deep breath. "She never knew noplace else; hardly knew a time Greg wasn' there."

"Some things just aren't meant teh be." She lifted her eyes to his face again and gave him a compassionate look. After all her years, she understood about changings and movings on.

"Yeah." He thought of the other Greg House who had come here, but said nothing of what he'd seen and suspected about the man.

Violet reached over to gently stroke the white wolf pelt that Bethany was wrapped in. "Who was this?"

"Angel," he said. "She was a friend."

"She loved yeh," murmured Violet, her eyes unseeing as she read the story of the pelt. "Saw yeh as her brother."

"Yeah," his voice was a little husky.

"'N now yeh've got another sister. Another family, yet not different." She shook her head with a slight smile. "The Master blows me mind with 'Is works."

"'E said 'E puts the solitary in families." Dog smiled slightly, rocking as Bethany started at a dream.

"Aye... feels like I've ben alone fer a long time. Though I ain't, really. Jes' never found my right place yet." She looked thoughtfully toward where the television showed an image of dancing fireplace flames.

"Yer welcome here."

"I know," murmured Violet. "Jes' got nothin' teh anchor me yet. Takes awhile teh grow inta a place, savvy?"

"Didn' take Zanoah that long." He lifted one brow.

"She's earthborn. I'm seaborn. Ships're easier fer me."

He stole a peek at her, then flushed again and returned his glance to Bethany.

Violet closed her eyes and smiled, resisting the urge to touch his hair and kiss his cheek, then gave him a gentle pat on the hand and got to her feet. "Think I'll go check out the fishin' boats. I'll see ye later, mate."

"Yeah." He thinned his lips slightly at not being able to get up and see her out, but then shook his head and smiled as she went breeze and swept away to the sound of seagulls and seals.

Bethany sighed at the sound and then gave a little laugh, her cheek twitching with her smile.

Dog sighed too, his face darkening again as he thought of Violet and the scripture of the solitary being put in families. "Lord, Yer will be done."
