The thing about being on the road is you never knew where you'd end up. As it so happened, Dean and Sam were staying at a nearby motel and Dean wanted a drink in a major way. It had been a long day. Sam decided to stay behind and read and so Dean set out on his own. He left the Impala behind as it was just a short walk and a well lit night.

Dean walked into the cantina, ordered a beer and settled on a seat off near a corner. He sat down, leaning back in his chair and took a nice long cool drink.

"Yeah, so did mine." Dean replies. "Sam made my dad mad sometimes too. We both did, but usually Sam." he grins. "I was the good boy." he chuckles. He wasn't really, he was just better at following orders.

The sternness in John's eyes increases, though his smile is still strong too.

"Did your Sammy steal the car and drink all the moonshine with the sheriff and fight with guys at school and go huntin' when he wasn't supposed to, too?" asks Buddy.

Dean isn't quite sure how to read John so he quickly answers and shuts up. "Hmm, nope. don't think so."

He's just trying to bust him in the chops a little for the 'good boy' comment and stops when he sees how Dean reacts.

"Did your brother do that?" he asks Buddy, reaching for his coffee.

"Yeah. All the time. He didn't like Dad because Dad stopped hunting." Buddy drinks milk.

Dean thought maybe John didn't want him talking about Buddy's dad, hence the confusion.

"Why'd he stop?"

"Because Dean died."

"Oh.." he falls silent. He tries to change the topic. "Want me to show you a neat magic trick Buddy? But you can't do it unless John helps you okay?"

The four year old blinks. "I dunno if it'll work."

"Sure it will." Dean smiles. He takes a quarter out of his pocket and a pack of matches. "This is the part that John has to help you with. You can't play with matches, got it?" Dean smiles.

He peels off the part of the pack that you strike the match with, bends it slightly and lays it across the quarter so that the black side is face down and arched away from the coin sort of like a bridge. He lights a match and then lights the striking paper.

"Now you just wait until it burns."

Dean waits then blows off the burnt paper. "See the brownish stuff that's left on the coin? Give me your fingers."

Sturdy small fingers are offered without question.

Dean wipes the coin on Buddy's thumb and then his forefinger.

"Now if you rub them together, it makes smoke. So if you prepare it beforehand it looks like magic." he smiles.

"Only it works here." He makes the smoke and laughs, unaware of the sudden shine of John's eyes at the sound.

"Right, because it's not real magic." he says with a smile, assuming that there must be an issue with real magic in this place.

"Now you can show your mom and surprise her good huh? Just make sure you wash your hands before you touch food or anything, it tastes horrible."
